An ex-president of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), Dr Alexander Tweneboah, has been arrested for sponsoring the activities of SIM box fraudsters.

Dr Tweneboah and some six suspects were paraded at the Police Headquarters on Monday with their equipment before media men.

According to the police, Dr. Tweneboah has confessed to committing the crime and owning the devices used in the illegal activities.

He was arrested in an anti-fraud collaboration between the National Communications Authority (NCA), telecommunication service providers in Ghana and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

The Director General of the CID, DCOP Prosper Ablorh said about Gh¢100 million has gone down the drain due to such illegal activities.

“This is one of the biggest and most successful operation by the taskforce,” the CID boss told the media. “We want to serve notice to the fraudsters that their days are numbered.”

About 21,232 SIM cards were recovered in the operation.

Fraudulent SIM Box operations have gained prominence in many parts of the world especially in Africa. The fraud takes place when individuals or organizations illegally terminate a voice call which is the preserve of registered licensed network operators, usually at lower cost than the approved rates.

These are then used to channel national or international calls away from licensed international gateway operators and presented as local calls on unlicensed networks. The net result of this illegal termination of minutes is a significant loss of international call revenue to both mobile network operators and the state.
