The move is in fulfillment of a promise made by President John Mahama during his third State of the Nation address in Parliament.
To complement the free sandals for needy pupils, the President also announced that half a million school uniforms will be distributed to pupils. 30,000 computers will also be given to various school laboratories and to improve ICT education.
Additionally, 15 million exercise books and six million text books will also be distributed to schools.
The exercise, according to sources, will be rolled out in phases across the country.
On Senior High School education, President Mahama said about 367,000 students will benefit from the government’s progressive free Senior High School policy starting in September this year.
“Government will begin the implementation of the progressive free SHS at the start of the 2015/16 academic year…367,000 day students will benefit from the progressive free SHS and they will pay no fees” .
