The Spain international, who previously won the award in 2021 and 2022, returns to the top of women’s football after being recognised at Monday’s Ballon d’Or ceremony at the London Palladium.
Putellas becomes a three-time winner, joining an exclusive group of players to have claimed the Women’s Ballon d’Or multiple times since the award was introduced in 2018.
Putellas succeeds BonmatĂ, who won the award in 2023, 2024 and 2025, becoming the second player to win the Women’s Ballon d’Or three times.
The midfielder’s return to the summit represents another milestone in a career that has been shaped by individual excellence, team success and a determined comeback from a serious knee injury.
Putellas rose to prominence at Barcelona, where she became captain and one of the defining figures of the club’s dominant era in women’s football. She was instrumental in Barcelona’s domestic and European success before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2022.
Her recovery and return to elite competition reinforced her reputation as one of the most accomplished midfielders of her generation.
The Women’s Ballon d’Or was introduced in 2018, with Norway’s Ada Hegerberg becoming its inaugural winner. Putellas’ latest success further strengthens Spain’s remarkable record in the award, following a period of sustained dominance by Barcelona players.
