The handover, which took place on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the Ministry of Defence, marks the end of Dr Ato Forson’s tenure as caretaker of the ministry.
Dr Ato Forson was tasked by President John Dramani Mahama to oversee the Defence Ministry following the death of the substantive minister, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, in the August 6, 2025 helicopter crash.
After about a year of providing interim leadership, Dr Ato Forson has now transferred responsibility for the ministry to Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, who has been appointed as the new Defence Minister.

The transition was formally completed through the signing of the relevant handover documents by the two ministers.
Adjei is expected to take full charge of the ministry’s administration and oversee the implementation of government’s defence policies and programmes.
He was reassigned from the Ministry of Works and Housing to the Defence Ministry as part of President John Dramani Mahama’s government reshuffle announced on Friday, August 7.
