Barely days after the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly disbursed the 5% PWD Common Fund to empower Persons with Disabilities in the district, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Mary Haruna, has led a delegation to mourn the passing of Mr. Gervace Dimouh, President of the Nadowli Disability Association.
The late Mr. Dimouh, a passionate advocate for the rights and welfare of Persons with Disabilities, passed away leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication to the PWD community in the district.
Hon. Mary Haruna, visibly moved, described the late President as a pillar of the disability community who worked tirelessly to ensure that the voices of Persons with Disabilities were heard and their needs addressed.
"This is a difficult moment for all of us," she said. "Just few days ago, we stood together in celebration as we disbursed support to our PWD brothers and sisters. Today, we stand together in grief."
The DCE emphasized that the Assembly's commitment to Persons with Disabilities goes far beyond the provision of financial support and assistive devices.
"Our responsibility as a district is not only to provide material assistance but to be present in good times and in difficult times alike. We do not only celebrate with the PWD community; we also mourn with them. This is what true solidarity means," Hon. Haruna stated.
During the visit, the DCE and her delegation extended their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, the leadership of the Nadowli Disability Association, and the entire PWD community in the district.
She assured them of the Assembly's continued support and prayers during this period of mourning, adding that the late Mr. Dimouh's contributions to the disability community would not be forgotten.
"We have lost a leader, a father, and a friend. But we take comfort in knowing that he lived a life of purpose, fighting for the dignity and inclusion of Persons with Disabilities. His legacy will live on," she added.
"Let us honor his memory by staying together and continuing to advocate for the rights and welfare of Persons with Disabilities in this district," she said.
The delegation's visit served as a powerful reminder that the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly's commitment to Persons with Disabilities is not transactional but deeply human.
From the recent disbursement of the 5% PWD Common Fund which provided support for income-generating activities, education, medical care, and assistive devices to this moment of shared grief, the Assembly has demonstrated that it stands with the PWD community in every season of life.
