Mr Baffour Awuah voluntarily surrendered himself at EOCO’s premises at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, to assist in an ongoing investigation.
The development follows an arrest warrant issued by the Accra High Court after EOCO told the court that previous efforts to secure the MP’s attendance for questioning had not yielded the required outcome.
The investigations concern allegations including criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences, among other matters.
Mr Baffour Awuah has denied receiving the alleged GH¢2.2 million as legal fees and has disputed aspects of EOCO’s account of its earlier attempts to secure his attendance.
EOCO has stressed that the investigations remain ongoing and urged the public not to reach conclusions about the culpability of any individual before the investigative and judicial processes are completed.
Afenyo-Markin challenges EOCO
Meanwhile, Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has challenged EOCO to intensify efforts to identify and prosecute the financiers and organisers behind Ghana-linked drug trafficking networks.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, October 1, the Effutu MP accused EOCO of placing undue focus on the arrest and investigation of opposition figures while, in his view, not demonstrating the same level of urgency in tackling major narcotics networks.
He called on the anti-graft agency to broaden its investigations and pursue individuals involved in financing and organising drug trafficking operations.
Mr Afenyo-Markin’s comments come amid heightened public attention on investigations into Ghana-linked narcotics cases and EOCO’s ongoing engagements with individuals implicated in various economic and organised crime allegations.
The investigations involving Mr Baffour Awuah remain ongoing.
