The suspect, identified as Marius, was arrested on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, on suspicion of deliberately poisoning 30-year-old Philipp, who played alongside him for amateur club TuS Rockenberg.
Philipp fell seriously ill during the team trip in 2025 and was taken to hospital after his condition deteriorated. He died on June 16, 2025, despite efforts to save his life.
Medical examinations later established that he had suffered septic multi-organ failure caused by poisoning. Forensic investigations subsequently uncovered evidence suggesting that his death may have been deliberate.
Senior public prosecutor Thomas Hauburger said investigators believe revenge could have been behind the alleged killing.
βWe assume that this was an act of revenge,β Hauburger told local media.
The circumstances surrounding Philippβs illness initially did not immediately point to a suspected murder. Reports indicate that people close to him had initially considered severe food poisoning after the team ate fish during the Dresden trip.
Investigators later focused their attention on Marius, who has since been placed in pre-trial detention. He has reportedly not made a statement regarding the allegations.
There has been speculation in the Rockenberg community that the two players had been involved in an argument over a woman, although this has not been established as the motive.
TuS Rockenberg football chief Manuel Barufe said the club was stunned by the development.
βWe are all surprised and shocked. Nobody expected this. We hope the police can fully clarify what happened,β he said.
The club has declined to comment further while investigations continue.
