Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, said the union had taken note of reports that some drivers had already increased fares, describing the development as unfortunate.
He stressed that fare decisions taken by the GPRTU were expected to apply across the board and, therefore, drivers should not take the lead in adjusting fares on their own.
“It has gotten to our notice and it is rather unfortunate on the side of those drivers. We were not expecting that because any decision we take goes across board and it is not right for them to take the lead by increasing transport fares,” he said on TV3's Ghana Tonight, Tuesday, September 1.
Mr Amoah explained that not all commercial drivers belonged to the GPRTU, noting that some were affiliated with other transport unions while others operated independently.
“Not all drivers fall under GPRTU, some belong to different unions and even some of them are floating; they do not belong to any union,” he said.
He, however, assured commuters that once the GPRTU officially announces a new fare adjustment, drivers who had already increased their fares would not be allowed to impose another increase.
“But we will make sure that if we come out officially, whatever percentage we agree upon, we will make sure that drivers who have already increased transport fares will not have the opportunity to increase again,” Mr Amoah added.
