The President gave the assurance during an inspection of the road project being executed under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper West Region.
He said the Wa-Han road was prioritised under the Big Push programme because of its strategic importance in connecting regional capitals.
“When we’re doing the selection of the Big Push projects, we prioritise roads that link regional capitals. And this is one of the roads that links the Upper East regional capital with the Upper West region. So it’s a very important road indeed,” President Mahama said.
According to him, the road has remained in poor condition for several years, resulting in growing doubts among residents about whether it would ever be completed.
He, however, expressed confidence that ongoing works would significantly improve the route and provide a more comfortable connection between the two regional capitals by the end of 2027.
“I believe that today we can see that in just some months, that is before the end of 2027, we will have a very comfortable ride between the two regional capitals,” he said.
President Mahama also commended the contractor executing the project, describing the company as one of Ghana’s oldest contractors with extensive experience in road construction.
He said government had identified several other roads in the Upper West Region for development but acknowledged that financial constraints made it impossible to execute all the projects simultaneously.
“I just want to assure people, everybody thinks that we can do all their roads at once. We cannot do that. There’s a limit to the budget that we have,” he said.
The President explained that the Big Push programme would therefore be implemented in phases, with priority initially given to major trunk roads before attention is shifted to feeder roads linking communities to the main road network.
“So this Big Push Phase One, we’re scoping Big Push Phase Two, and there’ll be a Big Push Phase Three,” he said.
President Mahama said the completion of the major road networks would pave the way for government to focus more extensively on feeder roads and improve connectivity for communities across the region.
