Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says the government's New Economy programme is designed to drive local production, reduce Ghana's dependence on imports, and create more jobs at home.

"Our mission is to produce more of what we consume and create more jobs here at home," he said.

Dr Forson said every imported product should prompt the country to ask whether it could instead be manufactured locally. "Every import is an opportunity to ask: why can't we make it in Ghana?" he said.

He described the New Economy as a decisive shift towards a more productive, job-creating, and prosperous Ghana. "That is the promise of the New Economy: Ghana producing. Ghanaians working. Prosperity growing," he said.

The remarks build on a message Dr Forson has repeated since taking office as Finance Minister in January 2025, framing government policy around cutting Ghana's reliance on imports, expanding domestic production, and rebuilding the economy following the country's recent fiscal crisis.
