According to the sex educator, what some women may describe as the womb being shifted is more likely related to the penis making contact with the cervix, which is located at the end of the vagina.
Speaking during a discussion on The Honest Bunch Podcast, shared on September 14, 2026, Elizabeth Adewale explained that the vagina changes significantly when a woman becomes sexually aroused.
“I’ve heard stories that a woman had to go to the hospital after sex because she felt the womb was shifted. Most of the time when they say shifting the womb, it’s more like exaggeration. I don’t think a penis can be long enough to shift the womb,” she said.
She explained that sexual arousal causes the vagina to undergo a process known as “tenting”, which allows it to elongate and widen.

“When the vagina is aroused, it goes through the process we call tenting. That tenting process elongates, and it widens. The vagina normally is about 3-4 inches when it’s not aroused, but when it’s aroused, it can go to 8 inches,” she stated.
Elizabeth Adewale added that because most penises are shorter than the fully elongated vaginal canal, penetration cannot physically reach or displace the womb.
“Most men don’t have 8 inches, so no penis can shift the womb. The most it can do is to touch the cervix. The cervix is at the end, so that’s where they can reach,” she shared.
She further explained that the sensation some women experience when deep penetration occurs may therefore be caused by contact with the cervix rather than the womb.
“That’s when many women feel like the penis is hitting the stomach, but that’s the cervix and not the womb,” she added.
