VRA to relocate Thermal Power Plant to Kumasi by December

The Volta River Authority (VRA) is expected to complete the relocation of the Thermal Power Plant, formerly known as the AMERI Power Plant, to Kumasi by December 2025.

Phase two of the project involves the movement of the four remaining plants from the Western Region to Awomaso, to help augment power supply in the Ashanti Region and the northern parts of the country.

Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority, Edward Ekow Obeng Kenzo, said the relocation of the remaining power plants to Kumasi will improve supply and stabilise the Volta.

This was made known during a visit to the Volta River Authority substation at Awomaso in the Ashanti Region, on Wednesday, October 1.

In a related development, Parliament’s Select Committee on Energy emphasised stepping up stakeholder engagement to safeguard powerlines belonging to the Ghana Grid Company Limited, which are continuously being threatened by illegal mining activities.

The Committee expressed concern about how illegal mining and encroachments on major gas pipelines are endangering Ghana’s power sector. It also pledged its commitment to engage relevant ministries and agencies to help address these challenges.

Deputy Ranking Member Collins Adomako Mensah called for concerted public efforts to prevent illegal miners and encroachers from getting close to powerlines and gas pipelines.

The Committee assured that it would engage the Finance Ministry on concerns raised by the VRA regarding tax exemptions on imported equipment.

Acting Chairperson of the Committee, Albert Nyakotey Tetteh, together with Deputy Ranking Member Collins Adomako Mensah, also stressed the need for more investments in the country’s energy sector despite the current stability in power supply.
