On a bright Saturday afternoon in Accra, the manicured grounds of the Accra Polo Club transformed into more than just a sporting venue. It became a meeting point for diplomacy, tourism and high-level business networking as Ghana’s corporate elite gathered for the South Africa Polo Experience.
Organised by the South African High Commission in Ghana, the event brought together diplomats, executives, entrepreneurs and sports lovers in an atmosphere that blended thrilling polo action with strategic conversations about business and travel opportunities between Ghana and South Africa.
Polo ; often described as a sport of precision, prestige and power proved to be the perfect setting.
As horses thundered across the field and players battled through fast-paced chukkers, guests mingled courtside, exchanging ideas and strengthening relationships. It was a gathering where sport met sophistication, and where networking was just as intense as the action on the pitch.
For the South African mission, the goal went beyond entertainment.
According to Acting High Commissioner Mpshiri Setlhare, the event was designed to reinforce the already strong diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries.
The polo experience also highlighted the growing link between sport and tourism ; an area South Africa has strategically invested in for years. Major sporting events have long been used to showcase destinations, attract visitors and stimulate economic activity.
That connection was echoed by Jeanette Moloto, Director of Global Sales Organisation and Area Sales Organisation for South and Sub-Saharan Africa at Marriott International.
Having visited Ghana regularly over the past 15 years, she described the country as a natural partner in using sport to attract global travelers.
She added that events like the polo experience help position Ghana as a destination capable of hosting premium sporting and lifestyle events, further strengthening its tourism profile across the continent.
As the afternoon unfolded, the polo action kept spectators engaged, but the networking around the venue was just as lively. Business leaders, diplomats and tourism stakeholders could be seen exchanging contacts, discussing potential collaborations and exploring opportunities across industries ; from hospitality to travel and sports development.
Tourism expert Thekiso Rakolojane emphasised that sport remains one of the most effective tools for promoting international travel.
He noted that with Easter holidays approaching, South Africa is positioning itself as a prime destination for Ghanaian travellers looking for both leisure and sporting experiences.
The day’s festivities ended on a high note with an exciting raffle draw organised by the South African mission.
One lucky guest walked away with a fully paid trip for two to South Africa ; a prize that perfectly captured the event’s core message of connecting sport with travel.
When the final announcement was made, the winner was revealed as Andy Asante of Handy Homes, who will now get the chance to experience South Africa’s tourism and sporting culture firsthand.
Beyond the glamour, the horses and the networking, the South Africa Polo Experience delivered a clear reminder: sport has the unique ability to bring people together while opening doors for tourism, diplomacy and business.
And on this day in Accra, polo did exactly that.
