Three people have been killed, while nine others sustained gunshot wounds following a fresh attack on Odomi, a community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region.
The attack occurred on Thursday, June 18 evening, when unidentified gunmen reportedly stormed the community amid the ongoing conflict in the area, triggering panic among residents.
The injured victims were rushed to the Nkwanta St. Joseph Catholic Hospital for treatment.
Hospital sources confirmed that one of the injured victims died while receiving medical care, while two others were brought to the facility already dead after reportedly being attacked on their farms.
The identities of the attackers remain unknown, and the circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established.
Security personnel, with support from the military, have intensified patrols in and around the affected communities to restore calm and prevent further violence.
The latest incident comes barely a week after the Oti Regional House of Chiefs announced the formation of a seven-member committee to help address the protracted conflict in the municipality.
The committee, which is yet to be inaugurated, is expected to engage key stakeholders and recommend sustainable measures to resolve the recurring tensions and restore lasting peace in the area.
Meanwhile, residents have appealed to the government and security agencies to strengthen security in vulnerable communities as efforts continue to contain the unrest.
Stakeholders have so far remained tight-lipped on the latest development.
