Video: Tensions flare at NPP NEC meeting over "Ken Must Go" protests
Tensions flared on Thursday, June 25, during a meeting of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) National Executive Committee (NEC) at Alisa Hotel in Accra, after a confrontation broke out between security personnel and a group of demonstrators chanting "Ken Must Go."

The NEC is currently holding a crucial meeting at the venue to deliberate on key party matters, including internal elections, restructuring efforts, and preparations toward the 2028 general elections.

The session was marked by scenes of disorder outside the venue as aggrieved grassroots members stormed the premises, chanting slogans and displaying banners to register their displeasure over developments within the party.

In a separate incident, another group of grassroots supporters reportedly clashed with security personnel and members of the entourage of Alexander Afenyo-Markin as he arrived for the meeting. The confrontation briefly heightened tensions and drew the attention of party officials and delegates gathered at the hotel.

The situation was eventually brought under control following the intervention of former NPP General Secretary John Boadu, who appealed for calm and urged supporters to exercise restraint.

The NEC meeting was continuing behind closed doors as of the time of filing, with no immediate reports of injuries or arrests.

The disturbances follow a meeting of the party's Steering Committee on Wednesday, which reportedly considered petitions filed against former Assin Central MP and former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong. The petitions are said to stem from recent criticisms by Agyapong over the NPP's failure to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital while in government, as well as warnings that he could "spill the beans" on alleged wrongdoing within the party if pushed further.

Some party members say Agyapong's comments undermine party unity and cohesion. The Steering Committee is understood to have discussed referring the matter to the party's disciplinary committee for further investigation and recommendations, while some party-affiliated groups have called for sanctions, arguing that his conduct threatens internal cohesion at a time when the party is seeking to consolidate and rebuild.
