Six arrested as Obuasi SHTS students assault headmaster for allegedly burying a baby

There is a heavy security presence at Obuasi Senior High Technical School in the Ashanti Region after some students went on a rampage, beat up their headteacher and vandalized school property.

The rampaging students violently attacked the headmaster, Abdullai Zakari, after they accused him of allegedly burying a newborn on the school’s campus.

The headteacher, who reportedly sustained multiple injuries, is currently on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

According to reports, the incident occurred between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. when one of the students claimed he saw the headmaster’s vehicle around the school’s refuse dump.

The student then raised an alarm, prompting his colleagues to mobilize to the area where they allegedly discovered that the headmaster had buried a baby estimated to be about five to six months old.

Following the alleged discovery, the students confronted the headmaster and assaulted him.

Reports indicate that police arrived at the scene, exhumed the body and deposited it at the morgue. Police intervention prevented further escalation that could have led to the destruction of property.

The students went ahead to destroy school property, including items at the headmaster’s bungalow.

Other first year students were also reportedly attacked after their seniors claimed they supported the headmaster.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Municipal Security Council, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, together with some senior police officers, visited the school and assured the students to remain calm.

The Obuasi Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, has also assured the students of maximum protection from the police.

Six people have been reportedly arrested in connection with the incident. Police have since commenced investigations into the incident.
