Cedi remains strongest globally, appreciating by about 21% as of September 12 — BoG Governor
The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has revealed that despite recent economic pressures, the cedi is currently among the best-performing currencies in the world.

The Cedi, which was ranked as the best-performing currency in the world by Bloomberg, has in recent times seen some level of depreciation, currently selling close to GHS13 on the forex market.

According to him, the local currency appreciated by about 21 percent as of September 12, 2025, despite seasonal trade pressures and a moderation in remittance inflows.

Speaking at the opening of the Monetary Policy Committee meeting on Monday, September 15, Dr. Asiama said the cedi now ranks alongside high-performing currencies such as the Russian ruble, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone, Swiss franc, euro, and British pound.

“Despite seasonal pressures and a moderation in remittance inflows in recent weeks, the cedi remains among the strongest currencies globally year-to-date, appreciating by about 21 percent as of September 12,” he stated.

He attributed the currency’s strength to “prudent monetary policy, effective liquidity management, fiscal consolidation, and increased foreign-exchange inflows.”

Dr. Asiama further announced that Ghana’s external buffers have improved significantly, recording a trade surplus of $6.2 billion in the first eight months of 2025.

He added that the country’s gross international reserves stood at $10.7 billion in August, enough to cover about four and a half months of imports.
