- The Black Stars are using the friendly against the World Cup co-hosts as part of their dress rehearsal for the global tournament

Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has come under heavy criticism from Ghanaian supporters after a costly early mistake handed Mexico the lead in their pre-World Cup friendly on May 23.

The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper endured a nightmare start after gifting possession away moments into the contest, allowing El Tri to punish Ghana almost immediately.

Asare's mistake leads to Mexico goal

Asare, who continues to divide opinion over Ghana’s No.1 shirt ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, found himself under pressure from the opening whistle as Mexico pressed aggressively high up the pitch.

With limited passing options available, the experienced goalkeeper attempted to play out from the back but picked the wrong pass.

Mexico quickly capitalised, as Brian Gutierrez intercepted the pass before curling a brilliant effort from distance into the net to break the deadlock inside two minutes.

The early setback instantly sparked frustration among fans watching the game, with many taking to social media to vent their disappointment.

Ghanaians blast Benjamin Asare for costly error
Supporters on X did not hold back after the blunder put the Black Stars behind almost immediately.

@Itx_Oscar slammed the goalkeeper:
"Benjamin Asare, what a clown."

@Kaypoisson1 lamented:
"So this is what Benjamin Asare will be doing at the World Cup? Harry Kane will end us. We allowed Mexico to score this easy goal in the 2nd minute, n Black Stars of Ghana."

@mistakoomson blasted Asare:
"After all the Taekwondo and Tai Chi training Benjamin Asare did, he still gifted Mexico a goal. Wei."

@epahofman demanded:
"Ahh, under 2 minutes, so this is what Benjamin Asare go do for the World Cup? Drop am Chale."

@vanasty_07 summed up:
"How did Benjamin Asare concede this goal, Harry Kane go use Ghana to milk goals ohh."

Asare's reaction after costly error
Despite the difficult beginning, Asare gradually settled into the game and showed resilience afterwards.

He produced a sharp point-blank save later in the first half to prevent Mexico from extending their advantage as the hosts continued to dominate possession and create chances.

While the mistake will undoubtedly fuel fresh debate about Ghana’s goalkeeping situation before the World Cup, Asare’s response afterwards also highlighted his mental strength under pressure.

With Ghana preparing to face elite attacking sides at the Mundial, every performance between now and the tournament will come under intense scrutiny.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper is also on course to become the first locally based shot-stopper to represent Ghana at the global tournament.
