In a Facebook post on Wednesday, August 26, the AMA said the suspects, comprising three drivers and three bus conductors, popularly known as mates, were arrested during an enforcement operation on Tuesday, August 25.
The operation, conducted between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., targeted commercial vehicles operating routes from the CBD to Awoshie, Kasoa and Madina.
The arrests followed a warning by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, against arbitrary increases in transport fares by commercial vehicle operators in the city.
“The arrests were carried out in line with clause 19 (f) and (d) of the AMA (Operation of Commercial Vehicles) By-laws, 2017, which prohibits a driver of a commercial vehicle from charging more than the fares prescribed and approved by the Assembly in consultation with representatives of the major transport operator unions.” AMA said
The arrested drivers have been identified as Joseph Bonney, Francis Morgah and Foster Osei, while the three mates are Benjamin Ofori Atta, Emmanuel Aduafo and Emmanuel Paa Ekow Amissah.
The AMA says the enforcement forms part of efforts to ensure compliance with approved transport fares and protect commuters from arbitrary charges.
