Ayariga, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings to be vetted today

The proposed vetting schedule was presented to Parliament on Monday, 24 August, by Ayariga, in his capacity as Chairman of the Business Committee. The exercise follows a request by the Business Committee for a waiver of the Standing Orders requirement concerning the publication of presidential nominations, intended to allow the Appointments Committee to proceed with the vetting without delay.

After the exercise, the Appointments Committee is expected to present its reports to the full House for consideration and approval, in line with parliamentary procedures.

Also appearing before the committee are three other nominees: Justice Sophia Bernasko-Essah, a Justice of the Court of Appeal; Justice Edward Amoako Asante, also a Justice of the Court of Appeal and former President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice; and Anthony Forson Jnr, a private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association. The three are being considered for elevation to the Supreme Court.

Their appearance before the committee is expected to focus on their judicial experience, knowledge of the law, professional record, understanding of constitutional principles and their suitability to serve on the apex court.

The vetting forms part of Parliament's constitutional responsibility in the consideration of presidential nominations. Under Ghana's constitutional arrangements, certain presidential appointments require parliamentary approval before nominees can assume office, with the Appointments Committee playing a central role in examining nominees and making recommendations to the House after the vetting process.
