The GFA announced the development on Wednesday night, confirming that the Portuguese tactician will continue as head coach as Ghana begins preparations for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with Carlos Queiroz for his appointment as Head Coach of the Black Stars for the next phase of the team’s programme,” the association said in a statement.
The agreement comes after Queiroz’s initial four-month contract expired following the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was appointed in April as a short-term replacement for Otto Addo, with his original mandate specifically covering Ghana’s preparations for and participation at the tournament.
Ghana advanced from Group L at the World Cup after recording a victory over Panama, drawing with England and losing to Croatia before their campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.
Despite the expiration of his initial contract, talks between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz have resulted in an agreement for him to continue.
“Queiroz’s previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, concluded a few weeks ago. Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window,” the GFA added.
The 73-year-old brings extensive international experience to the role, having previously coached Portugal, Iran, South Africa and Colombia, while also serving as an assistant at Manchester United and Real Madrid.
The GFA said it believes that experience, coupled with his familiarity with the squad, influenced the decision to retain him.
Further details regarding the duration of his new contract are yet to be made public, but the GFA said it will be announced soon.
