My wife is an alcoholic, but I am the complete opposite. I do not drink alcohol or take drugs. I can barely finish a bottle of Club beer, but my wife can sit in one place and drink a crate of beer or several bottles of other alcoholic drinks, then walk home as if she had only taken water.
People usually ask if I did not notice these things before marrying her, and my answer is always big no. She never drank alcohol during our dating days, and we hardly attended events together, so I had no idea this was the kind of lifestyle she would embrace after marriage.
Since we got married, her drinking habits have become a major problem in our home. She attends almost every party, wedding or funeral she hears about, and drinking is always part of the experience.
What hurts me most is that she does not seem to care how I feel, even when she drinks heavily in my presence.
Whenever I complain, she gets defensive and tells me she will break my head with a beer bottle if I try to stand in the way of her happiness. She argues that she does not drink every day, as though that makes everything acceptable.
Personally, I would rather prefer she drank one bottle occasionally than consume 10, 12 or even 15 bottles in one sitting. And this is not something that happens once in a blue moon. It happens almost every weekend or at least twice a week.
Since we got married, this issue has continued to drain me emotionally. I have tried speaking to her nicely, and I have also confronted her out of frustration, but nothing changes. She will promise to work on herself, and for a while, I will hope things will improve. Eventually, everything returns to normal.
Sometimes, I feel like crying because I never imagined that marriage would leave me this emotionally exhausted. I married a woman I love, but I now feel more like a caretaker than a husband. I want to support her, but I also want a partner who will take responsibility for her life, our home and our future.
I am very worried about her drinking habits and the threats she makes whenever I try to address them. I do not know whether she has developed an addiction or whether there is something deeper going on, but I cannot continue pretending that everything is fine.
I have tried being patient, understanding and firm, yet nothing seems to work. I want us to have children, build a stable home and enjoy our marriage, but I am beginning to fear what our future will look like if things remain this way.
Am I supposed to keep being patient and hope my wife changes, or should I start considering the possibility that love alone may not be enough to save my marriage? What do I do now?
