Relief is in sight for residents of Nadowli, Charisombo, and Takpo following a directive by President John Dramani Mahama to construct a steel bridge over the Kankanzie Stream. The move is set to end years of isolation and danger for these communities in the Constituency.

The President made the commitment during the first day of his two-day tour of the Upper West Region, following an emotional appeal from community members.

The Kankanzie Stream has long served as a treacherous barrier, cutting off one half of the constituency from the other. Residents recounted the harrowing difficulties they face daily trying to access essential services, markets, and schools on the other side of the stream.

Speaking on behalf of the community, the spokesperson lamented the loss of lives due to the lack of a bridge, revealing that the stream has claimed the lives of citizens, including medical professionals.

“We have lost lives, including nurses, because there is no bridge linking one half of the constituency to the other,” the spokesperson stated. “We would be very happy if only this bridge is constructed.”

The lack of infrastructure has been particularly detrimental to healthcare delivery, as the inability of nurses and health workers to cross the stream safely has complicated medical access for the locals.

While President Mahama was in the district to inspect the ongoing 24-hour Economy Market Project, the needs of the people took center stage. The community used the opportunity to present a laundry list of requests, including the establishment of a Nursing Training College and the rehabilitation of their roads.

However, the spokesperson emphasized that the construction of the Kankanzie bridge was their paramount priority. Their plea did not fall on deaf ears.

President Mahama, acknowledging the urgency of the situation, granted the request for the steel bridge. The project is expected to provide a durable and safe crossing point, effectively linking Nadowli, Charisombo, and Takpo.

The announcement has sparked optimism across these communities, with residents hopeful that the new infrastructure will not only save lives but also boost economic activity by facilitating the movement of goods and people across the constituency.
