Sorting and counting of ballots in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Greater Accra Regional executive elections have been delayed following disagreements over the order in which the ballots should be sorted and counted.

Incumbent Regional Secretary and aspiring Regional Secretary, Odarlai Parker, accused the outgoing Regional Chairman, Divine Agorhom, of insisting on directing the process despite his tenure having expired.

Speaking to the media, Mr Parker said several aspirants want the counting to begin with the chairmanship contest, which he described as the most contentious race, before proceeding to the other portfolios.

He argued that there was no clear provision requiring the election committee to start the process from the lower portfolios and move upwards.

“All we are saying is that they should start with the chairmanship. Then the other portfolios can continue.”

Mr Parker questioned why the outgoing Regional Chairman should be directing proceedings when he is no longer contesting the election.

“If he’s regional chairman, I am regional secretary. So if he’s there directing, I can also be there to direct. I am going for an election. For him, he’s not going for an election.”

He further alleged that the outgoing chairman was seeking to influence the process in favour of another candidate, although he did not provide evidence to substantiate the claim.

The disagreement stalled the commencement of sorting and counting, with the aspirants yet to reach an agreement on the procedure. Mr Parker insisted that the process must be conducted in a manner acceptable to all aspirants and pledged to resist any attempt to compromise the integrity of the elections.

The Greater Accra Regional NPP elections are part of the party’s ongoing reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
