General Constable Redeemer Owusu was reportedly lynched on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, after a motorbike rider who had been picked up by the police died while being transported to a hospital.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 17, General Constable Owusu and other officers were conducting highway patrols along the Gindabour-Kenkyen community road when they noticed a motorbike rider suddenly divert into the bush after spotting their patrol vehicle.
The officers followed from another direction and found the rider unconscious on a bush road.
They picked him up and began transporting him to a hospital, but he died while on the way.
The Police said the rider’s death subsequently triggered a mob attack on the patrol team.
General Constable Owusu was attacked and killed in the incident, while other members of the team sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The police vehicle was also damaged during the attack.
“The bodies of both the deceased officer and the rider have been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement added.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Yohonu, deployed investigators and intelligence officers to support the probe and identify those responsible for the attack.
Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna and Kalba, together with the Savannah Regional Intelligence Team, have also been deployed to the area to strengthen security and maintain law and order.
The Police said the 36 suspects arrested are currently in custody and assisting with investigations.
They are expected to be arraigned before the court after investigations.
The Police Command has condemned the attack and assured that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law.
