Musician Sister Derby has raised concerns over a growing trend in Ghana where some individuals release balloons into the sky to honour the dead, particularly during vigils.

In a post shared on X on September 27, 2026, Sister Derby noted that the trend is unwarranted, as it could also contribute to pollution in the country.

According to the singer, releasing about 50–100 balloons into the sky in memory of the dead contributes to plastic waste in the environment, adding that it could also lead to choked gutters, among other issues.

“Now there seems to be a trend in Accra of releasing maybe 50–100 balloons into the sky in memory of the dead, for example.

“Like seriously? Where do we think they end up? Is it necessary?

“So all the plastics/rubbers/rubbish the @buzstopboys dey show we nu, you think it’s from who?” she asked.
