Morocco shock Netherlands on penalties to reach 2026 World Cup round of 16

Morocco continued their remarkable 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands, securing a place in the Round of 16 after an enthralling 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 encounter.

The shootout began with Teun Koopmeiners converting confidently for the Netherlands before El Aynaoui struck the crossbar with Morocco's opening penalty. The momentum quickly shifted, however, when Justin Kluivert hit the post with the Dutch's second attempt.

Rahimi calmly converted Morocco's next penalty despite Verbruggen getting a hand to the ball, while Wout Weghorst responded for the Netherlands. Chemsdine Talbi then converted confidently before Quinten Timber fired wide to hand Morocco the advantage.

Hakimi missed the opportunity to put the Atlas Lions firmly in control when he struck the post, but Bono came to his nation's rescue moments later with a superb save to deny Crysencio Summerville.

That left Ismael Saibari with the chance to seal victory, and the midfielder kept his composure, calmly rolling his penalty into the bottom corner to secure Morocco's place in the Round of 16.

The memorable victory is another landmark achievement for Morocco, who continue to build on their growing reputation as one of international football's rising forces.

Their resilience, defensive organisation and ability to deliver in the biggest moments have once again propelled them into the latter stages of the World Cup.
