Police detained Abronye over alleged false news against IGP — Kwesi Botchway Jnr
The Bono Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, has been detained by the Ghana Police Service over alleged breach of peace and publication of false news.

This was disclosed by private legal practitioner and NPP communication team member, Kwesi Botchway Jnr, in a social media post on Monday, September 8, the same day the outspoken politician was arrested. Bono Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye

According to him, Abronye honoured an invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the police where he was interrogated for more than two hours.

“I got off the phone with Abronye’s lawyers a few minutes ago (3:20pm). According to him, he arrived with Abronye voluntarily at the Police CID HQ today at 10:30am upon the invitation of the police. He indicated to me that the police interrogated Abronye for about 2 hours after which he was arrested and charged with breach of peace and publication of false news,” he wrote.

Betchway Jnr claimed that the charges were linked to Abronye’s harsh criticism of the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohonu.

“It is important to add that, during the interrogation, a video was played where Abronye was seen and heard criticizing the Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohonu. This video forms the foundation of the arrest and charges,” he added.

He further alleged that the whereabouts of the NPP regional chairman remain unclear.

“After the interrogation at CID HQ, counsel tells me he was informed that his client was being moved to NIB. However, when he got to NIB, he was informed that Abronye had not been brought there. Currently he is still in search of his client. He has been searching for him since 1pm,” he wrote.
