28 casualties; 12 fairly critical cases, 5 in ICU, 6 dead — GAF details El-Wak Stadium stampede
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have provided details on the prospective recruits affected by the deadly stampede at El-Wak Stadium.

The military said 28 people were admitted to the 37 Military Hospital following the incident. Of these, five are in critical condition and receiving care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Addressing the media at the hospital on Wednesday, November 12, the same day as the incident, Commander of the 37 Military Hospital, Brigadier General Evelyn Vivian Abraham-Kwabiah said 12 others are in fairly critical condition, while the rest are stable.

She reiterated that the death toll remains six, contrary to earlier reports claiming it had risen to twelve.

“They were 28 in number. Those who are dead are six, and not twelve [as claimed by some media reports]. Those who are in critical condition and in the ICU are five. We have 12 who are fairly critical. The rest are stable,” she said.

The incident occurred before the start of the 2025/2026 GAF recruitment exercise, when a large number of applicants reportedly forced their way through the entrance gates.

According to preliminary investigations, the chaos was triggered by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed into the stadium ahead of the scheduled screening.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama, Acting Defence Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson,
Deputy Defence Minister, and the Chief of Defence Staff have visited the hospital, where the surviving victims are receiving treatment.
