Mahama to swear in Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as new CJ today
President John Mahama will today swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice, marking the formal completion of a transition that began earlier this year.

The ceremony follows Parliament’s decisive endorsement of his nomination on November 13, when legislators approved him by a vote of 163 to 69 after a closely watched vetting process.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie assured the Appointments Committee on November 10 that he would uphold judicial independence, promote bipartisan engagement, and strengthen access to justice.

His elevation comes after months of acting leadership. He has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, taking over following the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

President Mahama first nominated him on September 23, 2025, citing his long service across the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court, as well as his decades of experience on the Bench.
