Mahama extends IGP Yohuno’s tenure by two years

President John Dramani Mahama has approved a two-year contract extension for Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, allowing him to remain in office beyond his statutory retirement date in December 2025.

The decision, conveyed in an official letter from the Presidency and signed by Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, follows a recommendation from the Police Council.

According to the letter, the re-engagement will begin on 28 December 2025, during which the IGP “shall continue to serve as the Inspector-General of Police and discharge the duties and responsibilities attached to the office.”

The Presidency said the extension is to ensure continuity and maintain momentum on ongoing security reforms.

The letter stated that President Mahama’s approval “reflects the Council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period.”

Mr. Yohuno has been asked to formally confirm his acceptance of the renewed appointment within three days of receiving the notice.

He was appointed IGP by President Mahama on 13 March 2025, replacing Dr George Akuffo Dampare, after previously serving as Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.
