The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced that beginning January 1, 2026 Ghana Card will be a mandatory requirement for motorists when purchasing or renewing any motor insurance policy.
A statement issued and signed by the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, explained that the development forms part of initiatives to improve transparency and regulation in the insurance industry.
In accordance with the new regulation, corporate clients will also need to supply their Tax Identification Number (TIN) for all motor insurance transactions, and all individuals purchasing motor insurance must present their Ghana Card at the point of sale.
The NIC further stated that the policy is expected to reduce fraudulent activity, increase Know-Your-Customer and Anti-Money Laundering compliance, improve insurance claim management, and bring Ghana’s insurance industry into line with international financial services standards.
The Commission urged all motorists to take note of the new requirement and ensure they have their Ghana Card available when visiting motor insurance sales points from the effective date.
