The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the deadly robbery attack on the Berekum Chelsea team bus, an incident that claimed the life of footballer Daniel Frimpong
In an official statement released by the Ghana Police Service, authorities announced that the suspected gang leader and one accomplice are now in custody following an intelligence-led operation.
The statement further disclosed that one of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of gunfire with police personnel and is currently receiving medical attention under police guard.
According to the statement, “The Police have arrested the gang leader and one other suspect in connection with the robbery incident.”
It added, “One of the suspects sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with the police intelligence teams and has been conveyed to the hospital for medical attention.”
The attack occurred as the Berekum Chelsea squad was returning from their Ghana Premier League f Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex 1996, when armed robbers ambushed and attacked their vehicle at Ahyiresu on the Bibiani-Goaso road
Reports indicate the attackers blocked the road before launching the assault, players and officials on board to run for their lives.
Daniel Frimpong tragically lost his life during the incident, sparking widespread grief across Ghana’s football fraternity.
He was reportedly hit by gunfire during the incident and later died from his injuries at the Bibiani Government Hospital.
His death has also raised fresh concerns about the safety of clubs traveling for domestic league matches.
Reassuring the public, the statement emphasized that investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected. “Further details will be communicated,” the Ghana Police Service noted, underscoring its commitment to ensuring justice is served.
Authorities continue to pursue leads as efforts intensify to apprehend all individuals involved in the fatal robbery attack.
