The Minister for the Interior has declared a curfew on Bole Township and its surrounding areas in the Savannah Region, effective Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
The nightly restriction, from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., comes in response to security threats arising from ongoing chieftaincy disputes in the area.
The directive, issued on the advice of the National Security Council and supported by an Executive Instrument, follows violent clashes in Gbiniyiri, a farming community in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, where land disputes have triggered deadly confrontations. At least six people have been killed and 18 others injured, with families displaced and property destroyed.
To address the humanitarian fallout, the Ghana Red Cross Society has set up a temporary shelter at the Sawla District Police Headquarters to accommodate women and children fleeing Gbiniyiri and neighboring communities.
The government has imposed a complete ban on firearms, ammunition, and offensive weapons within the township and surrounding areas. The Interior Ministry warned that anyone found violating this order will face arrest and prosecution.
The curfew is intended to de-escalate tensions and protect lives and property. Authorities emphasized that while the restriction is temporary, strict compliance is essential. Residents have also been instructed to avoid pair rides on motorbikes throughout the day.
Additionally, the wearing of war regalia has been banned to prevent provocation and curb further clashes among rival factions.
The government has called on chiefs, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to maintain calm and resolve disputes through dialogue rather than violence. Community leaders have been urged to use their influence to promote peace and stability during this heightened security period.
