The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong has accused the party’s national leadership of openly favouring Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the lead-up to the presidential primaries.
In a statement signed by campaign spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng, Esq. on Thursday, August 28, the team condemned what it described as deliberate attempts to tilt the playing field in Dr. Bawumia’s favour. It particularly criticised the decision to use the party’s official social media platforms to exclusively broadcast the Vice President’s nomination filing.
“The use of the official party's social media handles to stream only DMB's nomination filing is a betrayal of the very unity our national leadership claims to preach,” the statement said.
The campaign maintained that this was not an isolated incident but part of a recurring pattern of bias that has long characterised internal party contests. According to Kwarteng, such practices unfairly elevate Dr. Bawumia while marginalising other aspirants.
He warned that the consequences of this perceived partiality have already been felt at the polls.
“Under his watch, we recorded the worst results in our party’s history: a 31% drop in national votes, a 16% decline in northern votes, a 33% fall in southern votes, and virtually no support from the Zongo communities,” Kwarteng stated.
The statement accused the NPP’s leadership of choosing to promote Dr. Bawumia despite these electoral setbacks, instead of prioritising reconciliation and rebuilding trust among party members.
“At such a time, the priority should be rebuilding a stronger, united party to restore hope and confidence. Instead, leadership continues to impose the very candidate under whom we suffered these losses, shamelessly projecting him as the 'establishment choice' by giving him undue advantages and platforms,” Kwarteng added.
The Agyapong campaign further cautioned that if this trend persists, other aspirants may have no option but to carve out their own political path.
“If this continues, leadership should not be surprised when other candidates begin to take their destiny into their own hands. The grassroots will not be forced into silence while the future of the party is mortgaged for one individual. Never!” the statement concluded.
