Six remand prisoners have escaped from the police cells at Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The inmates, according to authorities, might have escaped through a hole that had been dug, leading to the detached washrooms at the police station.

The inmates, after succeeding in moving out of the cell through the hole, jumped off and bolted.

A manhunt was quickly launched by the police, leading to the re-arrest of one of the escapees at a suburb in Kumasi, while five are currently at large.

Asante Akyem Central Municipal Chief Executive, Dr Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo, who confirmed the incident to Citi News, said the Municipal Security Council is taking steps to fortify the walls of the police cells.

He also announced other long-term measures, including putting up a new police station, and spoke about tasking the police to increase the number of officers, especially at night.

He added that the Municipal Security Council will improve the lighting at the police station and also install some cameras to help track and avert such incidents.
