When Hon. Mary Haruna was sworn in as District Chief Executive (DCE) of Nadowli-Kaleo, many residents wondered how she would steer the affairs of the district. Barely months into her tenure, she has shown that leadership is not about occupying an office, but about rolling up one’s sleeves and working with the people for progress. Her activities so far reflect a hands-on, people-centred approach that deserves both applause and support.
One of her first actions was a familiarisation tour to communities and stakeholders across the district. This move not only introduced her to the people she serves but also gave her firsthand insight into their needs and challenges. She followed this up by successfully convening the first ordinary meeting of the District Assembly, setting the stage for effective local governance.
On the development front, Hon. Haruna has initiated key government priority projects, including the construction of two CHPS compounds and the drilling of ten boreholes, four of which are mechanised. These interventions will greatly improve access to health care and potable water, addressing two of the most pressing needs of rural communities.
Her concern for the welfare and future of young people is also commendable. She visited Senior High Schools to motivate final-year students ahead of their examinations, cautioning them against malpractice. As part of the My First Day in School programme, she also encouraged pupils in Junior and Primary schools, inspiring confidence and a positive attitude towards education.
Community development has also been a focus of her administration. The National Sanitation Day held on September 1, 2025, was well-coordinated in the district under her leadership, reinforcing the importance of cleanliness and public health. Additionally, the district-level National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held on July 1, 2025, brought together people of different faiths to seek divine guidance and unity.
Hon. Haruna has also tackled sensitive issues of security and coexistence. She engaged Fulani herdsmen, sensitising them on the need for peaceful coexistence with farmers to avoid recurring clashes over destroyed crops. Such dialogue is essential for lasting peace and harmony in the district.
Furthermore, her presentation of the state of the district at the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) meeting highlighted her transparency, accountability, and commitment to progress.
Clearly, Hon. Mary Haruna has hit the ground running. What she has achieved in a short time proves her dedication to the service of Nadowli-Kaleo. But for her vision to materialise fully, she needs the backing of all—traditional leaders, opinion leaders, youth groups, farmers, women, and every ordinary citizen.
The DCE has laid a solid foundation. With collective support, her leadership can help transform Nadowli-Kaleo into a district of opportunity, unity, and sustainable growth. The time to stand behind her is now.
